Bold Changes Suggested For Downtown

A shared study has proposed bold and drastic changes to Bismarck’s downtown in an effort to create a solid community hub at the heart of the city. The total price tag to implement all of these suggestions would be an estimated $1 billion, including both private and public funding.

  • Depot Plaza, which would replace the parking lot at Fiesta Villa into a park for hosting special events and public gatherings
  • Condensing Main Avenue into one-lane traffic with a left turning lane to allow widening of the sidewalks
  • Greatly expanding Kirkwood Mall towards Bowen Avenue to include additional retail, upper-level residential, and an atrium-style food court
  • A downtown bus hub
  • Constructing a pedestrian underpass at 5th Street
  • Mehus Commons, which would be create green spaces and seating around the Bell Mehus
  • Eliminating the downtown one-ways at Broadway, Thayer, 6th, and 4th
  • Construction a parking ramp near the Civic Center
