Montana-Dakota Utilities (MDU)

Montana-Dakota Utilities (officially known as MDU Resources Group since 1985) is a multi-billion dollar publicly traded utility company with operations in 48 U.S. states. Based in Bismarck, it is one of the state’s primary energy providers, among the state’s top employers, and the only Fortunate 500 company based in North Dakota.

Its humble beginnings started as Minnesota Northern Power Company in 1924, when the company served only a small group of farming communities, mostly concentrated on the border of Montana and North Dakota.

MDU was headquartered in Minneapolis until 1968, when it was relocated to Bismarck. It was then that it erected a 5-story office building on the northwest corner of 4th and Rosser for an estimated $1.8 million.

MDU built a new corporate campus in 2004 at 1200 W Century Avenue, where it now resides.

MDU also operates several subsidiaries, including WBI Energy, Knife River Corporation, and Cascade Natural Gas.
