Saxvik Elementary

Saxvik Elementary was a Bismarck public elementary school located at 523 N 21st that operated from 1952-2016.

Saxvik was the third school to open in 1952, opening that November with 124 pupils in the first four grades. It was named for former Superintendent H.O. Saxvik, who died that January. Saxvik served in the role for twenty years.

Built at a cost of nearly $134,000, Saxvik originally housed only four classrooms and an activity room. It had no kitchen with students expected to take lunch at their own residences. The school expanded several times before closing in 2019.

In a controversial decision, the Bismarck School Board voted unanimously to close Saxvik Elementary at the completion of the school year. There were several reasons cited, including declining enrollment despite spiking student growth elsewhere. Further justification came from the $2.4 million needed in renovations.
