The report\u00a0suggests that lack of public transportation, compared to more urbanized areas, is one reason for North Dakota&#8217;s\u00a0position\u00a0at the top: &#8220;Drinkers are hard-pressed to catch a cab in North Dakota, let alone use public transportation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Despite this national infamy, drunk driving was not the leading cause of fatalities in North Dakota.\u00a0Failure to yield the right of way\u00a0ranked as\u00a0the number one cause of fatal crashes in the state, according to the study. Nationally, North Dakota ranked the fourth most deadly state in the right of way category.<\/p>\n<p>North Dakota also ranked just beyond the top five states for speeding-related fatalities.\u00a0Not surprisingly, the study also revealed\u00a0wind, snow, and rain as other top driving fatality causes.<\/p>\n<p>Despite\u00a0the state&#8217;s high rank in specific categories, another <a href=\"http:\/\/www.autoinsurancecenter.com\/americas-deadliest-driving-counties-and-states.htm\" target=\"_blank\">similar study<\/a> by the Institute actually ranked North Dakota about average in\u00a0safe\u00a0roads, with Burleigh County ranking as one of the state&#8217;s safest counties.
