{"id":110428,"date":"2015-04-28T12:47:56","date_gmt":"2015-04-28T17:47:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bismarckcafe.com\/blogs\/?p=110428"},"modified":"2017-04-17T09:21:29","modified_gmt":"2017-04-17T14:21:29","slug":"spartannash-aquiring-dans-supermarket-chain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bismarckcafe.com\/blogs\/110428\/spartannash-aquiring-dans-supermarket-chain","title":{"rendered":"SpartanNash Acquiring Dan&#8217;s Supermarket Chain"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Michigan-based SpartanNash, formerly Nash Finch, has agreed to acquire\u00a0long-time local grocery chain <a title=\"Dan\u2019s Supermarket \/ Supervalu\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bismarckcafe.com\/blogs\/wiki\/dans-supermarket-supervalu\" target=\"_blank\">Dan&#8217;s Supermarket<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/bismarcktribune.com\/business\/local\/spartannash-buy-dan-s-supermarket-chain\/article_632f32df-246b-5dfc-b679-a2ba020a55ab.html\" target=\"_blank\">Bismarck Tribune reports<\/a>. SpartanNash previously purchased the two Dan&#8217;s locations in Dickinson.<\/p>\n<p>The transaction is expected to happen in June. For\u00a0now, the stores will continue operating under the Dan&#8217;s Supermarket banner,\u00a0unlike the previous Dickinson stores, which were re-branded under SpartanNash&#8217;s\u00a0Family Fare banner.<\/p>\n<p>The purchase ends a long history of local ownership for the grocer, which was founded in 1949\u00a0when Roy Rockstad &amp; Eugene \u201cBus\u201d Leary purchased the local Piggly Wiggly and converted it to Bismarck Supervalu. The conversion will also likely\u00a0end\u00a0a long history of Supervalu-serviced local grocery stores, despite the major grocery distributor maintaining\u00a0a local warehouse.<\/p>\n<p>Ironically, <a title=\"Bismarck\u2019s Central Market Sold to Dan\u2019s Supermarket; Mandan Location Closing\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bismarckcafe.com\/blogs\/46921\/bismarcks-central-market-sold-to-dans-supermarket-mandan-location-closing\">Dan&#8217;s Supermarket purchased Bismarck&#8217;s\u00a0Central Market<\/a> in 2013, which was serviced by Nash Finch and operated under\u00a0Nash Finch&#8217;s\u00a0Econofoods banner\u00a0from 1988-1998. In addition to Econofoods,\u00a0Nash Finch also once operated a local warehouse-style grocery store at the corner of Broadway Avenue and 17th Street &#8211; the building now home to Conlin&#8217;s Furniture &#8211; called Warehouse Market.<\/p>\n<p>While not a locally owned company, SpartanNash&#8217;s\u00a0roots\u00a0do involve North Dakota, founded\u00a0when Fred Nash opened a small confectionery store in Devils Lake in 1885.
