It was rumored that the new store would be a Super<br \/>\nTarget encompassing two floors, but this never happened &#8211; possibly due to<br \/>\nWal-Mart opening two Supercenters in Bismarck that same year.<\/p>\n<p>Target first arrived during Kirkwood Mall&#8217;s 1980 expansion, along with JCPenney. It was Bismarck&#8217;s third modern-day discount store, after Kmart in 1971, and<br \/>\nWhite Mart in 1979 (now closed). <\/p>\n<p>Kirkwood Mall drastically changed Bismarck&#8217;s retail landscape when Paul Wachter opened it in April 1971 with original anchors Woolworths, Montgomery Wards, and Herbergers.
